An introduction to American Horror Story - Hotel

For the second half of this unit, we have been given a brief too create 2 characters using references to Gothic Horror as a point of inspiration, and to create them for our chosen TV series. I have chosen to create my characters for American Horror Story as this is probably the one that I am most interested in out of the list, I like this series in general as it references many different time periods throughout the series, and I will be able to create some really interesting looks.

American horror story is an American anthology horror television series produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, each series is conceived as mostly self contained ministries, following a disparate set of characters and settings and the storyline follow their pattern of a beginning, middle and end, some of these plots are loosely inspired by true events.

Hotel is the fifth season of American Horror story the plot centres around the enigmatic Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles, Calfornia that captures the eye of a homicide detective. The Cortez is a host to the strange and the bizarre, and the owner is The Countess, a bloodsucking fashionsista. This series features two murderous threats in the form of the 10 commandment killer and the Addiction Demon. This series is said to be a lot darker than the other seasons, and inspiration came from old hotwl horror films and actual hotels situated in downtown Los Angeles which have a reputation for sinister events.

Hotel had high initial ratings, the first episode nettes 12.17 million viewers, making it the second most watched telecast in FX history, falling just short behind the premiere of last years Freak Show.

The show attracted 6.13 million adults from 18-49 and 3.7 million adults from 18-34. So I would say that the demographic of this programme is definitely women from 18 - 49. I think there is a strong female demographic for this programme because of the strong female leads that are present throughout the series, there is romantic relationships that develop and disintegrate, this is always interesting to watch on screen and because it is always changing this keeps the viewer interested, there is also focus on love triangles that get messy. One of the main attractions of this series is that it is based on a real life event, when talking about the show Murphy said;
 "We were really, really inspired by the idea of a hotel. There was a surveillance video that went around two years aog that just showed a girl getting into an elevator in a downtown hotel that is rumoured to be haunted, and she was never seen again."

People think that he is referring to the video of Elisa Lam, the Canadian college student who went missing in Feb 2013, who was later found dead and naked inside a water tank sitting on top of the Cecil Hotel in LA, but her erratic behaviour was probably something more to do with a psychotic episode or drugs, rather than paranormal causes.

Aileen Wurnos played by Lily Rabe - AHS Hotel
There is also a cameo from Aileen Wurnos, the serial killer who was portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2003 drama Monster, Wurnos killed seven men whilst working as a prostitute between 1989 and 1990, she was convicted then later killed by  lethal injection.
